Beauty Priced Right. Beauty for a Cause. Beauty by & for Locals.

Ever since I dipped my toes in the world of local Indonesian products, I sat in anticipation with one wide-opened eye, on the look out for a new local brand I could try. Mad For Makeup caught my eye during a giveaway they were holding for inspiring women so that they could get their new Better Oval Brushes reviewed. Unfortunately, I did not win the giveaway. Although, they were kind enough to reach out and told me that they would still value my honest opinion, if/when I post them. So, here's what I've got to say about these brushes:

Picture

1. Mad For Makeup is one to back up!

.

Beauty Priced Right, the acclaimed Mad For Makeup motto, perfectly encapsulates what this brand is all about. Mad For Makeup calls themselves a Rebel Company, meaning they rebel against the corporate norm of making 1000% profit for makeup products. Mad For Makeup controls their prices by:
  1. Dealing directly with production factory
  2. Reducing marketing and indirect cost
  3. Redesign components to match needs not design
  4. Keeping nonessential cost and staffing low
  5. Source products locally when possible

In addition, they support local women organisations, such as Support Perempuan Kepala Keluarga (an organisation which supports women who are the head of their households), with their earnings. Click here for more information about this kickin' company.

2. Adorable packaging

Let's just admire the cute packaging it comes in. I know we're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but the Better Oval Brushes come in a box that sets the whole tone for how lux and soft these brushes are. Not gonna' lie, the brushes are so soft that I spent a good few minutes just dragging it across my skin. It felt like cuddling with an expensive faux fur coat.

3. Less Is More

In the spirit of what Mad For Makeup is all about, they only created two Better Oval Brushes: Artist (Rp.88.000,-), which gives a flawless finish, and Sculptor (Rp.68,000,-), for contouring. The company deliberately made the limited types of brushes to save us, their costumers, money. Since these brushes are so multifunctional, they decided that it wouldn't be necessary to sell a whole set of 5+ brushes like other companies do. Thus, causing us to buy and spend less.

The combination of these two brushes are a perfect Back-To-Basics type necessity for those who are still new to makeup or travel a lot. You can do a lot with these two brushes and pack light if you're like me, who has 3 different brushes for bronzing and contouring alone. Downsizing and minimising your options can be really refreshing for your makeup routine and bank account.

4. Built to do it's job

Mad For Makeup really spent time on developing these two lovely brushes, and the work they put in really shows through in the quality of these brushes. They're dense but not too dense to the point where the bristles are too stiff to move around, the handles are flexible enough to help you get all the crevices of your face, and the brush gives the flawless finish it promises on the label.

When applying base makeup, I always stick to a damp sponge of some sorts because brushes (oval brushes or not) always leave weird patterns or streaks due to its lack of blending abilities. Plus, they always stick to dry patches and emphasise my problematic spots. I was genuinely surprised to see that unlike all the other brushes, the Better Oval Brush left no tracks of brush use and it gave me that second skin look that I thought only sponges could achieve. I definitely think that these brushes are worth the price.

In conclusion:

There's not much else to say, really. If what the company stands for alone isn't enough for you to fully hop on the Rebel train, these soft and high quality Better Oval Brushes sure will. They do their job better than any other oval brush I've ever tried. If you're only up for one brush, my personal favourite is the Sculptor. Since it's smaller, it's more versatile (and it's cheaper, too!).

Some cons:
  • Less variant than other lines of oval brushes. Although, this is also a pro as I have discussed already. It would be nice to maybe see a really small/thin one to really cover all of our makeup needs.
  • They currently only sell Better Oval Brushes and Better Beauty Blenders. I really wish I could buy more things from the company, since their products are so great.
  • I don't have many complaints, really.

Just buy them. They're a fun update for your beauty blenders covered in questionable foundation stains, they're soft, and affordable. What more could you ask for?
