This locally made lipstick will steal a spot on your favourites!
If you live in Indonesia, you may have noticed Wardah's new product taking the city (or country, who knows, I live in a bubble that is otherwise known as Jakarta) by storm and easily reaching Cult Favourite status. Upon seeing my cousin fish one of their new Intense Matte Lipsticks out of her bag and how nicely the shade sat on her lips, I had to get my hands on them.
So, I hurriedly looked for the Wardah section at the first drug store I found (the lipsticks can be found at any drug store near you: Guardian, Century, etc). The store didn't offer any testers so I pulled up a picture of swatches real quick on Instagram, which are quite true to the colours in real life.
So here are some important things to note if you're interested in buying any of these gorgeous shades:
1. Super affordable
First of all, let me just say how affordable these lipsticks are. They were priced at Rp.46,000,- each. Which, compared to imported brands drug store brands like Maybelline that price their lipsticks at an average Rp.100,000,-, Wardah's lipsticks are a huge deal. And trust me, I'm all about saving money (aka being cheap) so I spoiled myself a lil and chose two shades: 10 (Miss Terracotta) and 11 (Choco Town).
2. Creamy texture and formula
I am personally not a big fan of matte lipsticks, which is why I hesitated trying out these lipsticks the first time I saw their ad on Insta. But after my cousin assured me that it was super creamy, I had to try it out. She was right. When I first tried it on my lips, the lipstick literally glided onto my lips and it didn't feel drying at all. If you're looking for a true matte lipstick, I would not suggest these lipsticks for you (although it does dry a little matter than when first applied). But if you're like me, who's not too into the crusty dead lip skin cells kind of look, you should definitely try these lipsticks out.
I'm one of those moisturising freaks that prep my lips with lip scrub, heavy-duty lip balm, and sometimes even coconut oil before I put on lip products other than lip gloss. But the texture of these lipsticks actually give me enough confidence to apply without the lip balm. In addition, since their formula is more creamy than other matte lipsticks, it is definitely more forgiving in terms of letting you wipe off any mistakes. Don't worry though, the lipstick won't budge. Also, most matte formulas don't usually mix well with moisturising lip products such as lip balms or lip glosses. However, since this lipstick is a bit more on the satin side, you can totally use this lipstick over your lip balm without any blotting, and you can layer lipgloss on top to change the texture of your lipstick.
3. Perfect shades
In terms of lipstick colours, there are two things that matter the most: shades and pigmentation. These lipsticks really do it for me in terms of shades. When I first swatched the two shades on my wrists, I was so in love that I went right back and bought another one: 12 (Lady Burgundy). The three darkest colours gave me major Kylie Lip Kit/Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick vibes with their dusty and mauve-y tones. I'm a huge fan of brown-based lipstick shades and the three ones I chose were perfect. They are a little darker than my actual lip colour, so it's not a Your Lips But Better kind of thing. But if you're in to the more natural look, I really do suggest shades 10, 11, and 12. Also, they're supper flattering on me whether I'm feeling pale or tan.
4. Build-able pigmentation
I'm going to be honest with you, the pigmentation is not the best. There are loads of matte lipsticks out there, especially liquid, that offer crazy pigmentation at the first swipe. These lipsticks are not one of those. However, they are build-able. Although streaky, its nothing a few more coats can't fix.
On the other hand, the lack of pigmentation could be a plus. Since these lipsticks have a lip balm feel to them, you could totally dab a little bit of product on your lips for a natural tint. I highly suggest doing so with shade 11 (Choco Town).
I've probably said creamy formula a 10000 times already. I don't care. Creamy formula!!!!!! I am absolutely in love with these lipsticks' ability to be matte, nourishing for my lips, have perfect shades, and cheap all at the same time. Another plus: supporting local brands is v cool!
10 out of 10 would recommend if you're not too big on the super-duper-matte matte lipsticks.
